France's Jean Nouvel, Century City tower designer, wins Pritzker

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The designer of a soaring, glass-shelled condo planned for Century City is the winner of this year's Pritzker Prize, architecture's highest honor.

French architect Jean Nouvel is singled out in the Prizker jury citation for his "persistence, imagination, exuberance, and, above all, an insatiable urge for creative experimentation."

Nouvel is the architect behind Paris' Arab World Institute and the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis.

In the works for the architect is a nearly Chrysler Building-sized tower next to New York's Museum of Modern Art.

The project in Century City will display verdant gardens visible behind its glass walls

Nouvel says for him, "every project is an adventure."

On view: Mark Hooper, John Calvelli

Mark Hooper's new show at Quality Pictures is a continuation of a kind of performance art photography: staged tableaux set in the ruins of buildings or in slightly ravaged patches of nature. The mood is always quiet and desolate, with usually a sole individual peering intently at something, somewhere. Mysterious and creepy in the way that Gregory Crewdson's terribly affected images are, Hooper's photographs evoke the lovely surreal, bending reality into a dream world signifying the vague. Is he trying to express something profound or just an ironist speaking through the language of ennui?

Quality Pictures, 916 N.W. Hoyt St. Continues until April 26.

John Calvelli is the prototype of the kind of Portland transplant that has enriched and deepened the local cultural scene in the past decade.

AIA plans courthouse restoration

The Tampa Bay chapter of the American Institute of Architects will share its plans to restore the historic federal courthouse during a reception and exhibition April 4 at Gallery AIA in downtown Tampa.

The exhibit will feature renderings and plans for the building, architectural photography and artwork related to the future of downtown Tampa. AIA representatives will also be available for questions.

AIA approached the city of Tampa with its proposal for the courthouse in October 2007, and a month later, a letter of agreement was reached.

Restructuring will include re-doing the mechanical and electrical systems. Preliminary work has begun.

Once restoration is complete, the building will be refashioned as the AIA center, a mixed-use facility focused on "architecture, urban planning and art with an international twist," a release said.

Dogs of War: Life imitating art

Contrary to popular wisdom, "private military contractor" is not a euphemism for mercenary. But the connections between today's security industry and the infamous freebooters of yesteryear like "Mad" Mike Hoare and Col. Bob Denard -- whose antics inspired and were immortalized by the 1978 movie, "The Wild Geese" -- are clear, especially when one considers the recent case of a real mercenary.

Simon Mann, 55, married with four children, is a former British army officer, South African citizen and mercenary.

He was accused of planning to overthrow the government of oil-rich Equatorial Guinea by leading a hired military force into the capital Malabo in an effort to kidnap or kill President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, a ruthless and corrupt dictator if ever there was one.
